In our disposable culture we sometimes forget that there is a beauty in items that have lived a life and are given a second chance through repair. With this simple technique, an old terracotta pot can be repaired quickly and easily with nothing more than some copper wire and a masonry bit.
This technique can give a favorite old pot a bit of character. It is also a great way to repair a cracked pot before it breaks into pieces. Copper wire is strung through holes along crack lines - like a shoelace - and tightened to hold broken pieces in place.
Broken terracotta, preferably with only one or two clean breaks
Copper wire
Dremel
1/8" masonry drill bit
Wire cutters
Pencil
1. Fit broken piece of terracotta pot into place. Using pencil, mark locations for drill holes, which should be placed like holes for laces on a sneaker . To prevent terracotta from cracking while drilling marks also should be ¼" to ½" in from break .
2. Use Dremel tool with masonry bit to drill holes on either side of crack.
3. Cut wire into 3 inch lengths. From outside of pot, put wire length halfway through bottommost drill hole on pot and put other end through bottommost hole of broken piece. Inside of pot, twist wires together until tight and trim excess copper wire. Repeat on remaining pairs of holes.
4. Push twisted copper wire against pot until flush.
